Creating Defensible Space
Defensible space is the natural and man-made area around a home or structure that is designed and maintained to reduce the risks of fire. Markit! undertook a project in Teller County, Colorado, to create defensible space around a home that was situated in the middle of a dense, overgrown, mixed-conifer forest. Without the creation of defensible space, the home most likely could not and would not be saved in the event of a forest fire.
Markit! Forestry substantially increased the survivability of the home by:
- Thinning trees around the home
- Removing ladder fuels
- Removing hazardous forestry fuels from the site. Over 10 tons of forest fuel was physically removed from around the home site
